I am memorialized on my father's tombstone below. It is thought that the ship's propellers either ground me to pieces or I was eaten by sharks. No one knows for sure if I committed suicide, but I always did adore verses about the sea. Around noon on April 27th, at the age of 33, I jumped off the stern of the ship. Orizaba at Veracruz for a return trip back to the United States. My father, however, passed away, ending my financial resources, and I produced mostly inferior work after that.ġ932: "The Broken Tower," was my last set of published poems which grew out of my relationship with Peggy Cowley. Words are always getting conventionalized to some secondary meaning. In 1923 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. Yeats was a driving force behind the Irish Literary Revival and has become one of the foremost figures of 20th century literature. I entered into a relationship with Peggy Cowley, a longtime friend and divorcee. This afforded me a year in Mexico, with the goal of doing what I loved, writing.ġ931: While in Mexico, however, my drunken habits followed me, and my friends thought I was going insane. "C33", was his prison cell number.ġ930: With intentions of improving my literary skills, I applied for and received a Guggenheim Fellowship. The basis for the poem was the imprisonment for homosexuality of poet, Oscar Wilde. I then published my first poem, “C33,” in Bruno’s Weekly at age 17. By this age I had a homosexual "interaction" and then attempted suicide twice.ġ916: I became friends with Richard Laukhuff, a German who loved to discuss and read books. Laukhuff opened a bookstore which was where I began to read small literary magazines. I believed in their American Romanticism.ġ912: I began to think of myself as a poet.ġ915: By the age of 16 I had experienced much turmoil within my family with too much attention and, at the same time, lots of neglect. I read Whitman, Emerson, and Browning all who influenced my later work. I spent most of my time in my grandmother’s extensive library and began an intense interest in poetry. I moved in with my mother’s parents in Cleveland. 1908: My mother had a nervous breakdown and was sent to a sanitarium.
